The RED5 U4 Gyro is a cheap little indoor remote control helicopter.
We've had one for about a month now and despite a few crashes,
it's still doing just great.
The RED5 U4 Gyro, as the name suggests has an inbuilt gyroscope,
making it extremely stable in flight and when hovering. It's
a huge step up from the little Styrofoam bodied remote control
helicopters of a couple years ago, both in terms of quality
and also flyability. It has a lightweight aluminum chassis and
a painted plastic body.
The helicopter goes where you want it. Stays almost completely
still when hovering, and is easy to fly. You can easily navigate
through doorways, and with a bit of practice, landing in a space
roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper is achievable probably
90 percent of the time.
Charging the helicopter can be done either via the handset,
or by using a USB cable. We recommend using the USB charger
as it gives the handset way more battery life.
A few flying tips. When taking off give it some power. Don't
mess around gently lifting off, otherwise it can get blown around
a bit by its own turbulence. Keep it away from walls, as when
it gets too near (within a few inches) it seems to get drawn
towards the wall - again probably something to do with it getting
caught in its own air turbulence.
The RED5 U4 helicopter includes the helicopter, the handset,
two spare main blades, a spare rear rotor, the USB charger and
some instructions. Pay attention to them as they'll tell you
how to initiate charging, and also explain how you have to take
a few seconds to stabilize the gyro after switching it on.
In all though the helicopter is a great little gadget. It's
not really a toy, as I doubt a young kid would have the skills
to keep it in the air. Also RED5 say 14+, but that seems a little
As a last test, one of our brave crew intentionally stuck their
finger into the blades while at full speed. It was fairly
painless. Eyeballs might be a different matter.
For the price it's an absolute steal.
