The Johammer J1 is an electric motorcycle built in Austria,
it is the product of Johann Hammerschmid and a small team of
designers, engineers and fabricators. Underneath that one piece
bodywork is some really rather clever stuff.
The front wheel, for example, doesn't rely on conventional telescopic
forks for suspension and steering. Instead it uses hub-center
steering and a double wishbone style front suspension mechanism.
The battery packs are located as far down in the aluminium chassis
as possible for a lower center of gravity which improves handling.
And the electric motor is integrated into the rear wheel and
is said to be maintenance free. It also features regenerative
braking to improve efficiency and increase range.
The 11 kilowatt hub-mounted motor provides 14 horsepower and
a top speed of 74 mph.
Electric hub-mounted motors contain the electric motor within
the wheel hub, or central part of the wheel. The hub motors
eliminates the need for a heavy transmission, gear train, and
axles which reduces the weight, making the electric bike far
The Johammer comes in two flavors, the J1.150 comes with an
8.3 kilowatt hour battery pack, which Johammer claims is good
for just over 93 miles. The more expensive J1.200, which weighs
400 pounds, sports a 12.7 kWh pack with a range of 124 miles.
Both models have regenerative braking and a single-stage "twist-and-go"
In place of traditional gauges, the Johammer's side mirrors
have high-resolution displays that show information on the bike's
speed and range.
